Behavioral Health Services 

Established in 1963, PRS provides skills training and supports so individuals living with mental illness, substance use disorders, mild intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, and anyone who faces life crises can achieve safety, personal wellness, recovery and community integration. PRS’ behavioral health services are provided throughout Northern Virginia.

PRS provides comprehensive and individualized services, including skill training and supports, counseling, interpersonal skills training, vocational assistance, supported education, substance abuse services and housing supports.

We work towards the following outcomes/goals:
  • Persons served demonstrate progress on their individualized, person-centered recovery plans objectives.
  • Persons served become integrated into their communities through employment, volunteering, return to school or other valued roles of their choosing.
  • Persons served receive primary care services regularly.
  • Persons served avoid psychiatric hospitalizations.
  • Persons served maintain their housing.
  • Persons served receive access to navigating available services.
  • Persons served receive early intervention and supports through first episode psychosis.

Recovery Academy Day Program

Center Services

PRS operates a Recovery Academy at PRS Fairfax, 3026 Javier Road, Fairfax, VA.

Based on the structure of a community college, the Recovery Academy is designed to: provide targeted psycho-educational curriculum in 12 week blocks; be a normalizing environment so that each client can focus on his recovery goals and identify as a student in recovery; and, most importantly, promote movement out of PRS’ facility-based programming and into meaningful community alternatives such as work, volunteering and school.

The course catalog includes over 40 class offerings, such as Anger Management, Anxiety Management, Coping Skills, Introduction to Recovery, Job Talk, Nutrition, Thinking Skills for Work, Let’s Get Moving, Grief and Loss as it Relates to Mental Illness, Spirituality, Money Management, Reaching Residential Success, Social Skills, Stress Management and Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP).

The Recovery Academy is a day program, and clients generally attend between 3-5 hours a day, 3-5 days a week.

Community Readiness Support Program (CRSP)

PRS’ Community Readiness Support Program (CRSP) is an Intensive Psychosocial Rehabilitation Program for individuals who are ready to work on their recovery in a daytime structured rehabilitation setting and may require intensive, individualized support due to their symptoms, circumstances, or recovery. Similar to PRS’ Recovery Academies, CRSP offers 3-4 psychoeducational groups per day where individuals served can learn and practice the skills they need to move forward in their recovery in a positive, strengths-based, normalizing environment. CRSP groups provide targeted, evidence-based curricula in domains of social skills, independent living skills, symptom management, and healthy living.

Stepping Stones

PRS is proud to announce the addition of Stepping Stones, a psychosocial rehabilitation program for adults who are ready for more independence in their recovery, but who still want to attend groups and work more on their skills. At Stepping Stones, participants can choose their schedule based on which groups they want to attend specific to their interests and goals.

The PRS Transition to Independence Process (TIP) Model® is an evidence-supported practice* with multiple studies supporting its effectiveness to improve post-secondary outcomes.

Community Support Services

PRS Community Support Services is a life skills training service designed to assist clients with making changes to move into recovery from mental illness.

This includes clients who have co-occurring disorders of mental illness and substance abuse/dependence, clients with Autism Spectrum Disorders and clients who have concurrent medical issues.

Objectives include:

  • Teaching clients to do and implement daily living skills in order to increase self-sufficiency and ability to live independently in the community.
  • Teach clients to maintain their residence to reduce risk of eviction from housing.
  • Empowering clients to take responsibility for their lives, to make informed decisions and to become invested in recovery.
  • Helping clients improve social skills and use of leisure time.
  • Helping clients improve overall wellness, increase strengths and resilience.
  • Collaborating with other healthcare providers, family and/or significant others to ensure that comprehensive service needs are met.

    Community Housing

    PRS Community Housing provides housing services to adults 18 years of age or older who meet diagnostic (DSM) criteria for major mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, recurrent depressive disorders and/or clients with co-occurring diagnoses of mental illness and either a mild intellectual disability or a substance use disorder. Community Housing is funded through HUD and all referrals come from homeless service providers.

    Employment Services

    PRS Employment Services are available to clients who are ready to seek paid employment in the community.

    Services include:

    • career counseling
    • on and off the job assessments
    • work adjustment training classes
    • job search support groups
    • specialized services for individuals with professional and technical skills.

    PRS Employment Specialists are trained in the “Choose-Get-Keep” model of supported employment, ensuring that each client receives services tailored to his/her particular needs, abilities, and career goals.

    They teach clients about job expectations, how to interview for a position, and how to cope with symptoms on the job. They are also available to ensure that the client’s transition to work runs smoothly, and to provide support to each client once employed.

    (LINC) Linking Individuals and Navigating Care

    LINC is an innovative treatment program for young people having a first episode of psychosis.

    PRS works in partnership with The Loudoun County Community Services Board to provide coordinated services to individuals ages 15-30 who are residents of Loudoun County. Services are designed to help people who have recently started having unusual thoughts or behaviors, such as seeing or hearing things others don’t or having thoughts that seem odd or strange.

    Outpatient Therapy Services

    PRS Outpatient Therapy Services provides individualized, person-centered therapy to help individuals with making changes to support growth and managing behavioral health conditions.

    Services are available for individuals ages 12 and older, and families, and are provided by licensed mental health professionals.  Services are offered in person at our Oakton office, and by HIPAA compliant video telehealth.

    Some of the specific services include:

    • Individualized assessment, diagnostic evaluation, and treatment planning
    • Individual or family therapy using a variety of treatment modalities
    • Individual and family psychoeducation
    • Coordination with and connection to community resources
    • Consultation with psychiatric/medication services, when necessary

      Family Peer Support Partners

      Family Peer Support Partners (FPSPs) are trained parents and caregivers who use their personal experience to offer support for parents and caregivers of youth diagnosed with mental health or substance use. FPSPs understand first-hand the challenges families may experience because they have navigated mental health and substance use systems with their own child. They have been trained to support families like yours.

      BeWell

      BeWell integrates primary health care and behavioral health settings, with the goal of improving the physical health of adults living with serious mental illnesses. BeWell utilizes peer health coaches to provide behavioral health services. The BeWell program is offered in partnership with the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board and PRS, Inc.
